A Time For Thanks

Like many I have been blessed this year.

I’m thankful for…

…my families constant support. For my husband who always sees my potential and tells me all the time how proud he is of me. To my children who inspire me. There have been so many times lately when they do without me. They understand when I cannot be there because of my weekend book signings and events. For their unconditional love I am thankful.

…my critique group who have been in my life for almost a decade. They are my weekly support system when I am in doubt of my work. I can count on them for encouragement, to listen and make me a better writer. They are like my extended family. I don’t know what I’d do without them. For their dedication I am thankful.

….my social media connections and friends. It’s my forum to vent, laugh and share. When I’m having a horrible day there is a word of encouragement. When I have something terrific to share someone is adding an emoji or a word of kudos. I don’t know 34,000 people and yet they still connect at one time or another. For my friends on these sites. You are consistent supporters of my work. I know some days you must hate seeing me once again in your feed. For their friendship and tolerance I am thankful.

…for my publisher who took a chance on me. Who believed my stories needed to be published. Who takes the time to answer my million and one emails. With that I hope to make Clear Fork Publishing rich someday! For their patience and open-mindedness I am thankful.

…for my illustrators who brought life to my characters. Andreea who made the characters of Step One, Step Two, Step Three and Four memorable. Bailey’s darling drawings in My Big Tree delights me every time I read the book. She even made a snakes lovable. Sunny’s adorable penguin. Iggy Loo warms my heart every time I look at him. He’s going to be on my Christmas card this year! For their wonderful talent I am thankful.

…for my faith that gives me the strength to overcome my struggles and help me see my worth. For this I am thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving!

“Road To Reviews,” Iggy Loo, Day 15

p26I got to LA bright and early to take in all the sights and hob nob with the famous folks. I went to Hollywood Boulevard and saw all sorts of interesting people. I saw over 2500 stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and slipped my feet into the Hollywood greats like Michael Jackson and The Beatles. Afterwards I headed off the the Los Angeles Zoo where the just finished a dinosaur exhibit. Starting November 18 they have Reindeer Romp where you can say hellos to Santa’s reindeer and take pictures with them! I got mine early.

The day wouldn’t be complete without a visit with my friend Trina. She was gracious enough to do a review of my holiday picture book Iggy Loo. Make yourself a cup of coco and take a listen.

Trina writes: The holidays are almost here and Maria Ashworth’s new book joins us at the perfect time. It’s a well-written and beautifully illustrated holiday children’s book that is ultimately about following our dreams and a reminder of the importance of family. A sweet and child-like penguin named Iggy Loo watches from inside his snow globe during the holidays. He craves the same adventures of his beloved red-headed girl, but sadly is returned to a box in the closet each year, only to emerge again during the next holiday season. Find out what happens when an accident removes Iggy Loo from his comfort zone and his wish comes true.” Iggy Loo” is a wonderful addition to any home’s holiday tradition. Curl up with your children by a warm fire, a hot cup of cocoa filled with yummy marshmallows, and open this book. The balance of exploring our ambitions while discovering that home and family is always right in front of us is something to be cherished. Iggy Loo is a beautiful addition to any holiday tradition!

“Road To Reviews,” Iggy Loo, Day 14

p14

I arrived safely in California. My first stop is to see the Golden Gate Bridge. Did you know it weighs 894,500 tons? That’s a lot of fish. It’s color is called “international orange.” It originally wasn’t going to be orange. Mr. Morrow, the architect said black was unattractive and reduce the scale of the bridge. Next, I traveled to the Fisherman’s Wharf to say hello to my west coast friends the sea lions.

I met up with my friend Sara. She was kind enough to do a review of my new holiday book.

Sara writes: Iggy Loo is an adorable story that my 4-year-old loved. We finished reading and he said “I want to do it again. That was so fun!” We both enjoyed reading about how Iggy the penguin’s life changes over time and how the relationship with the little redhead changes too. I loved that there were surprises in the story that I actually didn’t see coming and the illustrations give life to the story. The ending is very sweet and as a mom, I enjoyed reading this book with my son. It’s a great conversation starter about holiday traditions and passing on memories to our kids.

“Road To Reviews,” Iggy Loo, Day 12

JUST A NOTE

p9

In Idaho today! I had to see the craters of the moon! Created over 15,000 years ago by lava flowing from the Great Rift. A sight to see.

And how can one not see the Idaho Potato Museum while in Idaho! The museum is dedicated to you guess it the spud. Did you know a potato is made up of 80% water? I didn’t know there was so much to learn about a potato. Hey, what do you call a baby potato? A small fry! Ha!

Okay, let’s get serious. I headed over to my friend Kayla where she is going to review one of my favorite holiday books, Iggy Loo.

Kayla: Maria Ashworth’s “Iggy Loo” will bring you back to all of your Holiday memories. The little red head knew just what to do with Iggy Loo to conserve his memory and pass him down to…

“Road To Reviews,” Iggy Loo, Day 1

p6Welcome to the first day of my reviews. We’re here in the Big Apple state. There’s so much to do here. I have already eaten a steamed hot dog. They like to call it frankfurter here. This morning I had a fresh bagel and the bakery person told me eating a New York bagel is equivalent to eating one-quarter to one-half a loaf of bread. Who cares I’m not dieting. My favorite of course was the chocolate Italian ice.

I spent my day in Times Square where the lights never go out. This is where the ball drops every New Years Eve. Boy was it busy. I rode the ferry to see the Stature of Liberty. Then I went all the way to the top of the Empire State building. Did you know it has its own zip code?
And Joseph C. Gayetty invented the toilet paper here in 1857.

After a full day I stopped in Grand Island where Erin, @librarianerin_ graciously gave me a review of my new holiday book, Iggy Loo. Check it out at www.thelikeablelibrarian.com. Enjoy!

Interview With Iggy Loo

pg-34

Me: Good afternoon, Iggy. How are you doing?

Iggy: It’s a little warm in here but it’ll do.

ME: Well let’s get right to business. I read your story and I fell in love.

[penguin blushes] Thank you

Me: The illustrations by Sunny Choi were warm and beautiful.

Iggy: She really captured the feeling of the story with her illustrations. She really brought out my eyes.

Me: You’re name is quite original. How did you get the name Iggy Loo?

Iggy: When the redhead learned to talk she could only say a few words. She had a tough time pronouncing Igloo so every time she tried it would come out Iggy Loo. Every year I thought she was interested in my Igloo but she’d point to me and call me Iggy Loo. The name stuck. I couldn’t see being called anything else.

Me: You and the little girl come from two different worlds.  You live in a glass dome. How did both of you form such a solid relationship while living in two different worlds?

Iggy: In the beginning she would talk through the glass. I couldn’t understand much. Then when she started getting older she would tell me things about her doll, she hated broccoli and she doesn’t like going to bed. Then one day it happened. She said, I wuv you, Iggy Loo.” That was when I felt my heart ache. I knew what love was at that moment.

Me: Why did you want so much to be outside your snow globe?

Iggy: I thought my life would be better outside my globe. Thinking I was missing something. I wanted to find something greater. I thought “things” would make me happy. But nothing compared to being loved by the little redhead.

Me: I read now you found another special friend?

Iggy: Yes. [Iggy smiles] He reminds me so much of the days with the little redhead. Now when he calls my name I fall in love all over again.

Me: I heard you’re going on tour. Can you tell me about it?

Iggy: It’s called “Road To Reviews.” I’m going to be visiting 15 states. One state a day starting November 1st when my book debuts all over the world. I’ll cross the entire United States in two weeks. I’ll stop in each state and tell the reader something special about my visit. During my stop a mom, dad, librarian or blogger will review my book, Iggy Loo. It’s going to be magnificent.

Me: That sounds like fun! Where will your first visit be?

Iggy: My first stop, the Big Apple!

Me: I look forward to reading more about you and the reviews starting tomorrow. Thank you for stopping by and doing the interview.

Iggy: Did you really think I’d “flake” on you. Ha! Get it?
